چکیده

Inferring scene geometry and camera motion from a stream of images is possible in principle, but is an ill-conditioned problem when the objects are distant with respect to their size. We have developed a factorization method that can overcome this di culty by recovering shape and motion without computing depth as an intermediate step. An image stream can be represented by the 2F P measurement matrix of the image coordinates of P points tracked through F frames. We show that under orthographic projection this matrix is of rank 3. Using this observation, the factorization method uses the singular value decomposition technique to factor the measurement matrix into two matrices which represent object shape and camera motion respectively. The method can also handle and obtain a full solution from a partially lled-in measurement matrix, which occurs when features appear and disappear in the image sequence due to occlusions or tracking failures. The method gives accurate results, and does not introduce smoothing in either shape or motion. We demonstrate this with a series of experiments on laboratory and outdoor image streams, with and without occlusions. Chapter

Shape and Motion from Image Streams: a Factorization Method 2. Point Features in 3D Motion

In principle, three orthographic images of four points are su cient to recover the positions of the points relative to each other (shape), and the viewpoints from which the images were taken (motion). In practice, however, the solution to this structure-from-motion problem is reliable only when the viewing direction changes considerably between images. This con icts with the di culty of establi...

Recovering Non-Rigid 3D Shape from Image Streams

This paper addresses the problem of recovering 3D non-rigid shape models from image sequences. For example, given a video recording of a talking person, we would like to estimate a 3D model of the lips and the full head and its internal modes of variation. Many solutions that recover 3D shape from 2D image sequences have been proposed; these so-called structure-from-motion techniques usually as...

Factorization Method Using Interpolated Feature Tracking via Projective Geometry

The factorization method by Tomasi and Kanade simultaneously recovers camera motion and object shape from an image sequence. This method is robust because the solution is linear by assuming the orthographic camera model. However, the only feature points that are tracked throughout the image sequence can be reconstructed, it is difficult to recover whole object shape by the factorization method....

A Paraperspective Factorization Method for Shape and Motion Recovery

The factorization method, first developed by Tomasi and Kanade, recovers both the shape of an object and its motion from a sequence of images, using many images and tracking many feature points to obtain highly redundant feature position information. The method robustly processes the feature trajectory information using singular value decomposition (SVD), taking advantage of the linear algebrai...
